Many people are troubled by foot problems for one main reason. Ill fitting shoes.

Blisters, aching joints and hard, cracked skin are all common complaints that can be alleviated by choosing footwear that fits and then wearing the right shoes for whatever activity you want to do. For your feet to function as they are supposed to you need to choose shoes that fit.

In the course of an average day we will each walk around 10,000 steps and each time the foot hits the ground it must withstand the concentrated weight of your whole body. Our feet need to adapt to the surface we are walking on each time they come into contact with the ground. The foot then tightens and becomes tense in order to propel the body forward. There are some fantastic shoes designed to withstand this repeated cycle of use. For example, walking boots often have very strong, almost rigid soles that enable us to walk comfortably on very uneven surfaces.

One thing that many people overlook when buying shoes is how much their feet can swell during the day. The main cause of swelling is gravity. If you are in a line of work that keeps you on your feet all day you will probably be painfully aware of how much your feet can swell during the course of the day. As liquid is drawn toward your feet by gravity then your footwear will become increasingly tight and uncomfortable. You can lessen foot swelling by putting the feet up periodically throughout the course of the day.

If your shoes are too small then they will become increasingly painful as your feet swell through the day. Shoes that are simply too small are guaranteed to give you pain. It is therefore important to get your feet measured and accurately sized. Another point to remember when shopping for shoes is that your feet are smaller in the morning so be certain to make allowances for the swelling that will take place throughout the day. As a rough guide, try to allow about a fingers width of space, inside the shoes, in front of your big toes.

These days many people shop for clothes and shoes online. Inevitably, not trying on the shoes can lead to some problems as sizes can vary between manufacturers. One way to avoid problems is to try on the shoes that you want before buying them online. You may not be very popular with your local shoe stores but at least your shoes will fit.

A well fitted pair of shoes should never feel tight and they shouldn’t really need to be worn in. If they fit properly and they are right for what you want to do in them then they should be comfortable.

It is, of course, important to select the right shoes for the right job. It would be mad to attempt a marathon in a pair of six inch stilettos. In fact I think it’s actually mad to attempt to stand up in a pair of six inch stilettos. But shoes like these have their place. If your work involves standing up all day then always go for comfortable, relatively flat shoes with plenty of space in front of the toe and ideally laces so that you can loosen them when your feet swell, which they inevitably will.

A form of footwear that has become ubiquitous in recent years is, of course, trainers and skate shoes. Trainers today come in a variety of styles, many designed specifically for certain uses like jogging on concrete. Vans shoes and DC shoes are two notable brands with an excellent reputation for robustness, comfort and long life. I’m a great lover of trainers and will probably be wearing a pair when I finally shuffle off this mortal coil. There is a great variety of fantastic styles and colors available today that you should be able to find some that not only fit comfortably but look great with whatever you want to wear and for whatever you want to do.
