When most people think of visiting South Africa, they are normally focused on visiting the national parks and seeing all the animals in the game reserves. There are many interesting attractions in South Africa, but for some people, they want a better taste of what it really is like to live in the country.

This is where it is a good idea to go on a guided tour through the natural habitats of South Africa. South Africa is quite infamous for its Apartheid era. During the Apartheid years the blacks and whites were forcibly segregated from each other in society. It even went so far that the black people were made to live in separate areas of South Africa. These informal settlements are usually very poverty stricken, and most of the houses are make shift and shanty. These informal settlements are popularly known as squatter camps or townships. They are usually without running water and electricity, but as the years goes on the townships are being modernised and helped by the government.

A lot of anti-Apartheid struggles and defeats were revolutionized in the townships, and on one of the Soweto tours you will find yourself in the very places that Nelson Mandela himself ate, spoke and changed lives! During the tours through Soweto you will be shown memorials, as well as the homes and way of life for the people in the township and also sites where certain momentous Apartheid based occasions took place.

Most of these tours are very informative and even moving as you see the extent of suffering and poverty some people still have to live in as a result of the Apartheid struggle many years ago. For some foreigners they may not be aware of the true suffering the extent of Apartheid inflicted on thousands of people. Going on a township tour can be a real eye opener. It is also interesting and even fun to indulge in the African culture, taste the food and feel as if you have truly seen a part of history that has changed the world!

In addition to the Johannesburg tours available, most of the township tours, more specifically the tour through Soweto, will be given with running commentary on all the sites and sights, and usually end in a traditional or gourmet meal at a historical restaurant. There are excellent packages available that include the tours and a meal afterwards.
