Although it may seem odd, the childhood character Winnie the Pooh, Anne of Cleves and the Long Man of Wilmington all have something in common and that is the county of East Sussex. With such a wide range of attractions and a calendar jam packed with quality events, East Sussex should be on the top of every tourist’s holiday hit list.

East Sussex can be found in the south east corner of England and the county has a long and colourful history. Ruled variously by tribesmen, the Roman legions and several independent monarchs, it was also the site of the Norman Invasion of 1066. But it was during the 17th and 18th centuries when the fishing village of Brighton developed into the country’s premier seaside resort that East Sussex really came into its own. The elegant countryside of the south of England is varied, from the magnificent Friston and Ashdown Forests to the Lower Weald’s river lowlands and the breathtaking Chalk Cliffs at Seven Sisters.

And of course, a visit to East Sussex is not complete within a visit to the cultural diverse seaside town of Brighton. Choose from the superb range of Brighton holiday accommodation and enjoy the perfect base to explore everything the area has to offer. Brighton Pier, Brighton Beach and the orientally elegant Royal Pavilion are all must sees but you should also take time to play at the Toy and Model Museum and to ride the world’s first electric train at Volks Railway. If you are planning your visit during May, be sure to book tickets to a performance of Brighton festival, an event that is, after Edinburgh, Britain’s second largest arts’ festival. Complete your vacation to Brighton by browsing the many boutiques that make up the North Laine or perhaps stop for lunch at one of the areas many restaurants and coffee shops.

Holidaymakers should also consider taking a day trip to the charming town of Lewes or perhaps even the seaside town of Eastbourne. If you are lucky enough to get the chance to visit Eastbourne, be sure to pay a short visit to the Long Man of Wilmington, a mysterious chalk figure which has been carved into the hillside. Amongst other things, the charming historic town of Lewes is home to the perfectly preserved Anne of Cleves house, who was one of King Henry the 8th’s infamous wives. A family visit to East Sussex would not be complete without paying a visit to Battle Abbey and Pevensey Castle as well as Paradise Park where both children and adults alike can enjoy the park’s life size dinosaurs while reliving Prehistoric times. Whatever you are looking for from your vacation, from historic attractions to family fun, East Sussex offers something for everyone. To discover their stunning region for yourself, why not consider choosing from the range of Sussex holiday rentals and booking your own break in East Sussex today.
