City Breaks In Inverness and Important Things To Know
Inverness, frequently referred to as being the capital city of the Highlands, was granted city status in the year 2001 and at this time is the only city to be found in the Highlands. Uniquely (in Britain) Inverness has no legal boundaries which can cause problems when estimating populations. The problem is exaggerated by the fact that the population of Inverness is sharply increasing, Inverness has the highest growth rate of any British city. One of the things we know for certain is that the city has a rather content population, in a 2008 survey by the Telegraph.co.uk, about the quality of life in 189 cities in Great Britain, Inverness came fifth. So I think we can safely say that Inverness is a pretty cool city in which to spend time and this is most likely one of the factors which make the city incredibly popular with tourists. Crucially there is plenty of Inverness bed & breakfast accommodations with the majority being able to be booked online.
Inverness is also frequently called the gateway to the Highlands for the simple fact that it is best placed to get the most out of the Highland public transport system and a considerable amount of tourist attractions are close by. Probably the best way to see them is by using an official tour or day trip. A few tour companies visiting places such as, Loch Ness, Culloden or Urquart Castle or for the more adventurous visitors you can to visit Orkney and John O’Groats in a single day. It is also possible to find a small number of city tours, such as those run by City Sightseeing.
A small percentage of tourists choose to stay in two places in the Scottish Highlands such as Fort William and Inverness. Fort William is most popular with folk who enjoy sports especially rock climbers, hill walkers and ramblers who take their chances climbing Ben Nevis which looks down upon the town. In a similar way to Inverness Fort William bed and breakfast and rather like other bed and breakfast in Scotland it is most often not incredibly expensive, very good value for money and incredibly clean, tidy and comfortable with unbeatable hospitality.
An important thing to remember is that Inverness’s airport is, roughly, 7 miles from the city at Dalcross. It is easy to hail a cab or catch a bus to the small but busy airport which is not too expensive. If you will benefit from using maps of Inverness then you will find them free at the tourist office, in the center of town. While you are in the city you should make a mental note to visit the Mercat Cross and ‘stone of tubs’, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and Inverness Castle especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an interactive experience which is great fun.
