Increasing numbers of folk are deciding to take vacations nearer to home this year. For most of us the decision is to save money but is this the correct decision or a dreadful mistake? Often many of us fail to see the large number of local attractions but they are commonly excellent and far better than those we would see elsewhere. People living in the United Kingdom have an astounding list of places for a vacation all of which have a huge selection of first class tourist attractions to visit. In this article I discuss the English city of York and York hotels.

The city of York is situated in Yorkshire (an English county) and was, hundreds of years ago, the capital of northern England. With such an old city it will not be a great surprise to find a massive collection of incredibly old architecture, however you might not expect the awesome sight of the 12th century Gothic York Minster.

The earliest York Minster was a tiny wooden building in which King Edwin of Northumbria was baptised in the 7th century. It wasn’t until the time of the Norman Conquest that the earliest sunstantial construction made from stone appeared on the site. Constructed by Thomas of Bayeux it was enhanced by Archbishop Roger who added a a south transept and a north transept. After many additions and alterations the cathedral was declared complete and consecrated in 1472. Inside has the largest medieval stained glass window in the world. York has other places to visit including; Barley Hall, The Shambles, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum, York Castle Museum and York Dungeon.

Besides all of the awesome historic and ancient tourist attractions mentioned earlier, the city of York is an excellent city to go out partying in or experience live music, the theatre or opera. It that doesn’t excite you then you could spend the evening in a pub there are certainly masses to choose from, including; Slug and Lettuce, The Minster Inn, Old Star Inn, The Bluebell Inn and The Royal Oak, and, lastly, the Black Swan. Of them all the Black Swan is questionably the most widely appealing with an excellent atmosphere and sometimes having live music.

Hotel Accommodation In York

Like many other cities in the UK you will discover a massive variety of York bed and breakfast ranging from budget guest houses to luxury hotels. The Middlethorpe Hall hotel is just two miles from York city centre but gives excellent bed and breakfast with it’s own private gardens, gym, sauna and steam room, and you can even get a massage. Other first class hotels in York include; Marriott on Tadcaster Road, Hotel du Vin and Bistro, Parsonage Country House Hotel and Bishops at 135 Holgate Road and one of the best guest houses is Crossways on Wigginto Road, or if you are in need of something different why not investigate Marmadukes Boutique Hotel.
