Since it’s a gateway to the Costa Blanca, Alicante is an excellent base for touring. Alicante has lots of monuments to please sightseers and historians alike and can be seen throughout the city with statues and columns adding interest to many a once uninspiring location. Keeping a keen eye across Alicante Bay, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is said to be one of the largest medieval fortresses throughout Europe. Easily reached by car or by lift (elevator) from the Paseo Maritimo, the fortress offers unbeatable vistas of the wonderful surrounding area. Apart from the excitement the Castillo has on offer, Alicante has further ancient treasures including the nineteenth century bullring and the Provincial Gallery (formerly the Gavina Palace). Alicante harbour provides an ideal location for activity night and day. This is where visitors come to eat wonderfully delicious, fresh seafood, learn sailing and finish the day off with a bout of clubbing into the small hours.

Nobody likes a celebration as much as the locals and visitors of Alicante! Here you will find an event of one type or another happening throughout the year, no matter what time of the year you choose to visit. One of the more sedate of Costa Blanca festivals is the Easter Procession. Dressed in black and carrying lighted candles, an effigy of Jesus is carried on a cross around the streets. Each November, in honour of the Patron Saint Crist del Bon Encert, each town has its own fiesta. Expect shops to be closed all day, every day as the town closes down for this amazing combination of singing, dancing and firework displays. On a lighter note, one of the most renowned local festivals is that of the International Puppet Festival.
