Tipping and America go hand in hand. The custom of tipping for most services should be adopted when in America, despite what you are used to at home. The following is a top 5 guide to tipping for anyone visiting the beautiful country on American holidays

1.    Have some dollars ready. $10 worth of $1 dollar notes should be carried in your wallet at any one time so make sure you ask for a little extra at the currency exchange.  This will make it easy to give whatever value of tip you want without having to ask for change. Although asking for change is quite common also so don’t be embarrassed

2.    Bars. It is common to tip around a dollar a drink at the bar but if you are ordering three or more drinks then you don’t have to keep to the $1 per drink rule, just give a reasonable amount. If the beverages are served to you all night at your table then you should really leave a 10% tip on your bill at the end

3.    Restaurants. The really is dependent on the restaurant in question. Cheaper take-away style places only really should be tipped maybe 15% whilst more up market eateries should be tipped at a rate of around 20-25% of the bill. You should increase the tip amount for staff who put in the extra effort you or are particularly helpful.

4.    Bags. The porter who brings the bags to the room will probably be expecting tip of one dollar per bag. This quite a strong rule of thumb but you can always tip more if the service was great or there was a lot of effort involved for the porter. The helpers who carry your bags at the airport should be tipped between $2 to $4 per bag

5.    Poor service. If you don’t feel that the service was up to standard then don’t tip. You should ensure that you outline your reasoning though. Constructive feedback is generally appreciate in the USA and the people you give it to are rarely offended. Florida holidays staff are particularly humble.
